How PDF Redaction Works

First, pdf.js renders your PDF page onto an HTML canvas — this is the visual preview you see on screen. You then draw black rectangles over areas containing sensitive information using click-and-drag mouse interaction. When you apply the redactions, the tool renders each page at high resolution, draws the black rectangles permanently onto the canvas pixels, and then captures the entire canvas as a flat JPEG image. This flattened image is assembled into a new PDF using jsPDF. Because the output is a flat image rather than structured text, there is absolutely no way to recover the information beneath the black boxes. The text layer, metadata, and any selectable content are completely eliminated in the output.
